Manchester United bring the Third Round of 2021-22 FA Cup to a close against Aston Villa in Monday Night Football at Old Trafford.

Utd are looking advance beyond this stage for the eighth consecutive season, whilst Villa are looking to avoid a sixth straight exit in the Third Round.

Anthony Martial could return for Man Utd after recovering from a knee injury which has kept the Frenchman out for the last month.

Victor Lindelof (illness) is also set to return but Harry Maguire (abdominal) is a doubt but Paul Pogba (quad), Eric Bailly (international duty), Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay (both suspension) are ruled out.

Aston Villa will welcome Ollie Watkins back from illness after he missed their Premier League loss at Brentford last weekend.

Ashley Young (toe) is a doubt but Tyrone Mings will return from suspension.

Trezeguet, Bertrand Traore (both international duty), Leon Bailey (hamstring), Marvelous Nakamba (knee) and John McGinn (suspension) are ruled out.

Stat Attack

  • Man Utd have lost just two of 12 previous FA Cup matches against Aston Villa (W10, L2)
  • Villa have won just one of six previous FA Cup ties against Man Utd at Old Trafford (W1, L5).
  • Utd have defeated Villa in each of their seven previous clashes in the Third Round of this competition (W7).
  • Man Utd are unbeaten in their last 11 home matches in the FA Cup (W10, D1).
  • Villa have won just one of their last six away matches in FA Cup (W1, D1, L4), dating back to January 2012.

Prediction

After enduring another frustratingly lacklustre display against Wolves last time out in the Premier League with a weak midfield effort, Man Utd definitely need a huge performance if they’re to continue strong FA Cup head-to-head form against Villa.

Villa meanwhile come into this game as hot underdogs but will be disappointed with how they blew their lead at Brentford last weekend, where loss of defensive marking proved their downfall in a tightly fought battle against the Bees.

Steven Gerrard though will probably be wise to go for a counter-attack strategy here given the quality United have up front, whilst the players themselves will be confident of causing a cupset after winning here in the league in September.

On that note, I am not expecting a classic and a draw wouldn’t be a surprise given Utd’s disjointed performances except for the saves of David De Gea, whilst Villa’s shaky defensive focus is their biggest worry at present.

I however wouldn’t be surprised if one of the many youngsters at Villa like Jacob Ramsey or Cameron Archer steps up as an unexpected hero, especially the longer the game stays goalless and Utd continue to look unpredictable with little connection across the pitch.

Prediction: Manchester United 0-1 Aston Villa

Result: Manchester United 1-0 Aston Villa
