2021-22 Sky Bet Championship: Week 24 Roundup

Bournemouth returned to the summit of the Sky Bet Championship following a heavily disrupted festive round.

With Fulham amongst several teams not in action, Dominic Solanke fired Bournemouth back to the top with a 41st minute winner at ten-man QPR from Junior Stanislas’ free-kick, before Hoops substitute – Andre Dozzell was red carded in injury time following two bookings.

This victory also marked the first time that Scott Parker’s Cherries moved back top of the table in seven matchweeks.

West Bromwich Albion remain fourth after Colin Kazim-Richards pounced on a defensive blunder from Cedric Kipre to fire in a 58th minute winner for rock-bottom Derby County, although Wayne Rooney’s Rams are now 14 points away from achieving safety.

Middlesbrough climbed to fifth after Ryan Yates’ backpass own goal and a rebound strike from Andraz Sporar secured a 2-0 home win over Nottingham Forest, as Steve Cooper’s Forest suffered only their second defeat of his reign.

Huddersfield round out the top six as Sorba Thomas’ late brace secured a dramatic late comeback 3-2 home win over ten-men Blackpool, after Jerry Yates and Gary Madine fired the Tangerines in front either side of Danny Ward’s equaliser before Jordan Gabriel was red carded.

Postponements Galore

Elsewhere, eight matches were postponed due to Coronavirus outbreaks, with Cardiff’s home clash against Coventry the first match to be called off on Monday 20 December, followed by five further matches across 21-23 December;

  • Barnsley vs Stoke
  • Peterborough United vs Reading
  • Preston vs Sheffield United
  • Fulham vs Birmingham City
  • Millwall vs Swansea City

Luton’s Boxing Day home tie against Bristol City was postponed just after noon on Xmas Day, whilst Hull’s encounter against third-placed Blackburn Rovers at KCOM Stadium was called off just two hours before kick-off on Boxing Day.

Swansea’s home clash against Luton in matchweek 25 on Wednesday 29 December was also called off ahead of this round due to several players isolating for ten days after positive cases.
