Sam Kerr Signs New Two-Year Contract at Chelsea Women

Sam Kerr has signed a new two-year contract to stay at Chelsea until June 2024 which will begin at conclusion of this season.

Since arriving at Chelsea on a free transfer in November 2019, Kerr has scored 39 goals in 55 appearances across all competitions as the Blues did the Women’s Super League and League Cup double last season and finished runners-up in UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Speaking about her decision to extend her contract, Kerr said: “It’s really exciting. I’m really happy at the club. We’ve had good success, being at a club like Chelsea is an amazing opportunity.

‘The time was just right, I feel really comfortable being here. I think the club gives me every opportunity to succeed as a player.”

Kerr also ruled out “going anywhere else in the world or leaving Europe”, as she feels that she has everything that she needs at Chelsea.

Explaining why she decided to sign the new contract now at this stage of this season; Kerr added: “The time was right, honestly, I didn’t feel like I wanted to rush into anything, just like signing here the first time, it just happened naturally.”

Kerr also praised her teammates for being “world-class” who help to challenge her every day in training and during matches on top of winning trophies both as a team and as well as individually.

Having won the WSL Golden Boot last season, Kerr iterated that her intention every season isn’t to go into every match seeking to win the award and instead just goes “out there to give everything I can to the team and help the team to succeed and win trophies.”

Kerr though admitted that it is “nice” to win individual awards but added that her main goal each season is to win proper trophies like WSL, Women’s FA Cup and Women’s Champions League, because winning individual awards alone “wouldn’t be that rewarding” in Kerr’s opinion.

Chelsea Women’s General Manager, Paul Green meanwhile is “absolutely delighted” to secure Kerr for two further seasons, describing the 28 year-old as “quite simply one of the world’s best strikers and goalscorers.”
