Mauricio Pochettino Extends PSG Stay Until June 2023

Paris Saint-German have activated an one-year contract extension to retain Mauricio Pochettino as manager until June 2023.

Pochettino joined PSG in December 2020 in place of Thomas Tuchel and guided the Paris based team to the 2020-21 Ligue 1 Runners-up position, one point behind eventual champions – Lille after a dramatic title battle.

Reports this summer then suggested that Pochettino could terminate his contract early to return to Tottenham Hotspur, following Jose Mourinho’s sacking before Nuno Espirito Santo was eventually appointed as the North London club’s new manager.

The Argentinean has consequently decided to extend his stay at PSG until June 2023 which he is “very happy” to have signed, revealing that he needs “to feel the confidence of the club” as the team look to regain their Ligue 1 crown after failing to defend their title for the first time since 2016-17 season.

Pochettino also reflected on his experience as captain of PSG 20 years ago, commenting: “Twenty years ago I was captain of this club and today I am the coach… It’s a dream come true.”

Chairman and CEO of PSG, Nasser Al-Khelaifi added that he is “delighted” that Pochettino has signed a contract extension, iterating that the Argentinean’s past experiences as a former captain ensures that “he understands the club values, ambition and vision for the future.”

On what fans and football pundits can expect from PSG this season following the signing of Gianluigi Donnarumma, Sergio Ramos and Georginio Wijnaldum amongst others, Al-Khelaifi said: “With Mauricio’s leadership, we’re excited and confident about what the future holds.”

Pochettino’s coaching staff consisting of; Jesus Perez, Miguel D’Agostino, Toni Jimenez and Sebastiano Pochettino have also signed new one-year contract extensions.

PSG will now kick off their 2021-22 Ligue 1 season away to Troyes on Saturday 7 August (8:00pm UK Time), as Pochettino looks to chase his first league title as a manager, although he did guide PSG to a 14th Coupe de France title after defeating Monaco 2-0 in last season’s Final in May.
