PSG Appoint Mauricio Pochettino as Manager

Paris Saint-Germain have appointed Mauricio Pochettino as their new manager after dismissing Thomas Tuchel just days earlier.

Having previously played for PSG as a centre-back and club captain in 95 appearances between 2001-03, Pochettino has signed a one-and-a-half-year contract up to end of 2021-22 season with an option to extend the deal until June 2023 depending on results in due course.

Tuchel was sacked just days earlier after a shaky start to the season with the club seeking a fresh direction after “in-depth analysis” of the club’s sporting situation.

Speaking on his decision to become PSG manager, Pochettino said; “I would like to thank the Club’s management for the trust they have placed in me.”

Pochettino also spoke of his history with the reigning Ligue 1 Champions and quality of current team, saying; “As you know, this club has always held a special place in my heart. I have wonderful memories, especially of the unique atmosphere of the Parc des Princes.

“I return to the Club today with a lot of ambition and humility, and am eager to work with some of the world’s most talented players. This team has fantastic potential and my staff and I will do everything we can to get the best for Paris Saint-Germain in all competitions.”

The ex Argentinean international has also vowed to deliver passionate football which PSG fans expect, saying; “We will also do our utmost to give our team the combative and attacking playing identity that Parisian fans have always loved.”

PSG Chairman and CEO, Nasser Al-Khelaifi is “very pleased” to have Pochettino as the club’s new manager, saying; “I am proud to see our former captain returning to Paris Saint-Germain, as the Club has always remained his home.”

Al-Khelaifi also spoke of Pochettino suiting the club’s future plans with the Qatari saying; “The return of Mauricio fits perfectly with our ambitions and it will be another exciting chapter for the club and one I am positive the fans will enjoy.”

Pochettino formerly managed Tottenham from Summer 2014 until his sacking in November 2019 where he was involved in a long-term project, with Al-Khelaifi hinting at something similar for PSG as he said; “With the appointment of Mauricio Pochettino, Paris Saint-Germain is committed to continue to build and move the club forward over the coming years.”

With the players’ festive break concluding, Pochettino will take charge of training for the first time on Sunday 3 January 2021 as the club currently sit third and a point behind Ligue 1 leaders – Lyon.
