AS Roma have signed goalkeeper, Rui Patricio from Wolves on a three year-contract until June 2024 for an initial £9.8m fee.
Patricio first joined Wolves in summer 2018 and kept 30 clean sheets in 112 domestic league appearances, as he helped the club achieve Europa League qualification in 2018-19 season, before regularly starting in goal as the West Midlands club enjoyed a strong 2019-20 European run to the Quarter-Finals.
Roma confirmed that they’ve paid an initial £9.8m fee but there are additional performance related clauses, based on achievements of club and player to individual set targets.
Speaking on his move to Roma, Patricio commented that this is “a new challenge” as he will be playing under fellow Portuguese, Jose Mourinho who he hailed as “one of the greatest coaches in the world and I am excited to start working with him and doing everything I can to help the team.”
Roma General Manager, Tiago Pinto in turn spoke of his belief that his club will benefit from Patricio’s “huge amount of success” with Sporting Lisbon, Wolves and Portugal’s national team as they look to mount a title challenge after a tricky seventh-placed finish on goal difference from Sassuolo last season.
Wolves’ Technical Director, Scott Sellars meanwhile paid tribute to Patricio for his effort at Molineux, saying: “We would all like to thank Rui for everything he has done for Wolves during the past three seasons.
“He has been part of the best years of the club’s recent history, in terms of the success we have had, coming to us when we were newly promoted and helping the club to achieve two seventh place finishes.”
Sellars went on to hail Patricio as “a fantastic servant” of Wolves but believes that Roma serves as “a fantastic opportunity” for the 33 year-old to experience a new challenge in Europe and wishes Patricio “the very best of luck at Roma.”
