Jonas Eidevall has been appointed as the new Head Coach of Arsenal Women after Joe Montemurro stood down at end of 2020-21 season.
Eidevall makes the move after departing Rosengard following two spells at the Swedish club in which he delivered 2017-18 Svenska Cupen and 2019 Damallsvenskan titles, as well as a Quarter-Final appearance in 2020-21 Women’s Champions League where they lost 4-0 on aggregate to eventual winners – Barcelona.
Speaking on his appointment as Arsenal Women’s Head Coach, Eidevall said: “I feel honoured to be taking this role.”
Eidevall also spoke of his “ambitious” aim to build on the Gunners “rich history” of success in the women’s game with 61 trophies won in several different competitions, although he has iterated the importance of the club living by its “values and defend the club badge on a day-to-day basis.”
Arsenal Chief Executive, Vinai Venkatesham added that Eidevall was their “standout candidate” for the job both on and off the pitch as they undertook a thorough recruitment process, with belief that he is “going to be a great fit to be the head coach of Arsenal Women.”
Venkatesham also spoke of Eidevall’s attacking style of football as being something which Arsenal fans expect and want to see, commenting: “He’s someone who likes to play on the front foot, high-tempo, attractive, attacking football.”
On discussions with Eidevall prior to his appointment, Venkatesham noted the Sweden’s “desire” to join Arsenal and be a part of the club’s future as well as look to deliver on Arsenal’s ambitions across short, medium and long-term futures.
Arsenal enter this season off the back of a third-placed finish in last season’s Women’s Super League, which secured them entry to this season’s revamped UEFA Women’s Champions League in a change of qualification rules permitting three English teams entry to the tournament instead of just the top two clubs.
Eidevall will also have a chance to win his first piece of silverware as Arsenal manager before Xmas as the Gunners remain in 2020-21 Women’s FA Cup, where the Quarter, Semi and Grand Finals will be completed during the new season after another Coronavirus pandemic induced hiatus earlier this year.
