Aston Martin have announced that Luca Furbatto has been appointed as their new Engineering Director ahead of 2022 Formula One season.
Furbatto’s move comes after four years working as Chief Designer at Alfa Romeo where he has helped the Swiss outfit finish eighth in each of the last three seasons, including under their former Sauber name in 2018.
Furbatto’s previous F1 experience include stints at BAR, McLaren and Toro Rosso.
Speaking on his ‘very exciting’ switch to Aston Martin, Furbatto said: “It is a project that has all the ingredients for success – committed leadership, a talented workforce, and fresh investment in resources.
“I am looking forward to playing my part in establishing this team at the very top of the sport.”
Aston Martin have also promoted Andrew Green to the newly title position of Chief Technical Officer with immediate effect, with the 56 year-old describing Furbatto’s arrival as ‘the first of many key appointments’ at the team.
Furbatto will therefore report to Green when he takes up his new position as part of the management restructure.
Aston Martin CEO and Team Principal, Otmar Szafnauer meanwhile has welcomed Furbatto’s appointment, commenting: “Working with our existing Engineering Group, he will bring a valuable perspective and knowledge to help shape our approach in the short and medium term.”
Szafnauer also noted that Green’s appointment will enable him to ‘take a global perspective on the company’s mid to long term technical strategy.’
Furbatto’s responsibilities will extend to ‘both trackside and factory operations’ in order to enhance working processes and performance across the team, as Aston Martin look to build on a solid return to F1 after a 61 year absence.
Furbatto will take up his new role at Aston Martin’s factory base in Silverstone ahead of the 2022 season, with F1 currently gearing up for this weekend’s 2021 French Grand Prix at Circuit Paul Ricard.
