Germany have announced that Hansi Flick will replace Joachim Low as manager of their national men’s team in July.
Low announced in March that he will step down upon the conclusion of Germany’s Euro 2020 campaign, with the German Football Association (DFB) confirming that Flick will take over once Germany’s campaign is over should they still be in the competition when his contract starts on 1 July 2021.
Flick’s contract will see him take charge of Germany’s bid to reach 2022 FIFA World Cup and 2024 European Championships, of which the latter tournament will coincidentally be hosted in Germany itself.
Flick previously served as Assistant Manager under Low from 2006 to 2014 culminating in their 2014 FIFA World Cup success, with the 56 year-old stepping up into the Sporting Director role within the national team prior to a switch to TSG Hoffenheim in that same position.
2019 saw him appointed as Bayern Munich manager where he has won seven trophies in two seasons, with his notable successes including 2019-20 Champions League, 2020 FIFA Club World Cup and two Bundesliga titles.
Flick also spoke of his excitement at stamping his own vision on not just the senior team but throughout Germany’s youth ranks once he takes over, although he iterated that the main focus now has to be on ensuring that Germany give Low ‘a great finish’ to his time as manager this summer.
DFB Director, Oliver Bierhoff has admitted to feeling ‘very proud’ to have secured Flick as manager after the German proved at Bayern that he is ‘capable’ of leading a top team.
Bayern Munich will now commence a search for their new manager with an announcement to be made in due course.
