Ed Woodward has resigned as Manchester United Vice-Chairman following the collapse of European Super League proposals.
Woodward first joined Man Utd in 2005 in a financial based role before stepping up to control the club’s commercial and media sector two years later, prior to being named as Executive Vice-Chairman in 2012.
Speaking on his decision to step down, Woodward said; “I am extremely proud to have served United and it has been an honour to work for the world’s greatest football club for the past 16 years.”
Woodward has vowed to “treasure” the memories of his 16 years with the club in which the Red Devils won 19 trophies across all competitions and underwent a “regeneration of the club’s culture” to place them “well positioned for the future” moving forwards.
The 49 year-old has also pointed towards progress made in recent years in ensuring that club’s academy is once again “flourishing” with graduates like Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood emerging through the youth ranks into the senior team.
Another highlight includes the relaunch of Manchester United Women who won the Women’s Championship in their maiden season, before establishing themselves as a top WSL club and even sat top across seven matchweeks this campaign.
Despite often finding himself under attack from fans, Woodward praised them for their “passionate” support throughout “good and bad times” of what he has described as a “challenging period” following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
Man Utd Co-Chairman, Joel Glazer paid tribute to Woodward for showing “great distinction” throughout his work for the club with full “dedication.”
Reflecting on the impact that Woodward has had upon Utd, Glazer said; “His contribution to the club has been massive, and he will always be welcome at Old Trafford as a part of the Manchester United family.”
Woodward will step down at the end of 2021 with a potential successor to be named in due course.
