Pirelli have announced full details of its testing plans across 20 days throughout 2021 with 18-inch tyres ahead of Formula One’s move to larger tyres in 2022.
The current F1 tyre supplier will conduct ten test sessions across 20 days this season using nine of the ten F1 teams in preparation for the switch to 18′ tyres next season in line with new technical regulation changes.
Tests will feature a variety of track conditions with six dry weather test days on slick compounds whilst France will see wet tyre tests held at Circuit Paul Ricard and Magny-Cours on 25-26 May and 15-16 September 2021 with Mercedes and Alpine.
Williams are the only team not selected to conduct testing with all nine other teams to receive testing opportunities throughout the season.
Ferrari have already conducted three days of testing for Pirelli having ran at Jerez last month from 22-24 February with the opening day held in dry conditions, followed by wet-weather running on the latter two days.
Speaking on testing plans for the new 18-inch tyres, Pirelli’s Head of F1 and Car Racing – Mario Isola said: “We’re looking forward to resuming our tests for the new 18-inch tyres shortly, but as the Covid-19 pandemic – which led to the suspension of the test programme last year – is not yet over, it’s possible that our planned schedule for this year may have to be modified.”
Isola also confirmed that there is a ‘back-up plan’ in place in case of tests having to be cancelled due to travel restrictions as a result of the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic.
The Italian though is confident that Pirelli can ‘solidly’ carry on from where they left their development tyre-testing in 2019, saying: “Nonetheless, we have put together a programme that should enable us to pick up solidly from where we left off in 2019 and finalise the specification for a new generation of tyre under fresh regulations that will give Formula 1 a very different look next year.”
