2020-21 Premier League: Week 22 Roundup

Manchester City remain top of the Premier League after a packed midweek round saw more drama at both ends of the table.

Gabriel Jesus fired City ahead on the rebound after Nick Pope had flapped away his save of Bernardo Silva’s shot in the third minute, before Raheem Sterling confirmed City’s ninth consecutive league win by rifling in a square pass from Ilkay Gundogan to defeat Burnley at Turf Moor.

Luke Shaw and Bruno Fernandes both provided two assists each and Anthony Martial collected a brace as Manchester United ran riot in a NINE GOAL routing of nine-man Southampton at Old Trafford, with the Saints having Alexandre Jankewitz and Jan Bednarek sent off in both halves.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s header and James Justin’s tap-in ensured victory for third-placed Leicester at Fulham, as the Cottagers remain in 18th position.

West Brom failed to capitalise on Fulham’s misfortune despite taking a 44th minute lead through Matt Phillips at Bramall Lane, as goals from Jayden Bogle and Billy Sharp secured rock-bottom Sheffield United a comeback win to move within a point of the Baggies.

Liverpool rounded out the top four despite suffering a shock defeat as Steven Alzate fired in a shock 56th minute winner for Brighton at Anfield, earning the Seagulls their first win over the Reds in all competitions since February 1983.

Jesse Lingard netted a brace on his West Ham debut since signing on loan from Man Utd, scoring from two assists by Michail Antonio as the Hammers clinched a 3-1 away win at Aston Villa.

Elsewhere, Chelsea rose to sixth with victory over Tottenham after Jorginho struck a 24th minute winning penalty following Eric Dier’s foul on Timo Werner.

First-half goals from Glyfi Sigurdsson and Dominic Calvert-Lewin saw Everton defeat Leeds at Elland Road despite Raphinha’s 48th minute consolation for the hosts, putting Carlo Ancelotti’s Toffees up to seventh.

Wolves came from behind to stun Arsenal at Molineux through Joao Moutinho’s 25 yard screamer, after Ruben Neves’ penalty either side of red cards for David Luiz and Bernd Leno cancelled out Nicholas Pep’s opener for the nine-men finishing Gunners.

Finally, goals from Jairo Riedewald and Gary Cahill saw Crystal Palace come from behind to win 2-1 at Newcastle, after Jonjo Shelvey gave the Magpies a shock first minute lead from Callum Wilson’s knockdown pass.
