Manchester City extended their lead at the Premier League summit following a dramatic weekend in the title race.

Gabriel Jesus fired in a ninth-minute winner for City from Ferran Torres’ pullback as the Citizens found themselves in a match-long scrappy encounter against rock-bottom Sheffield United.

Manchester United fell three points behind their neighbours in second after being held to a goalless draw at Arsenal.

Patrick Bamford provided assists for Stuart Dallas and Jack Harrison either side of scoring himself, as Leeds came from behind to stun Leicester in a 3-1 win at the King Power Stadium, leaving the Foxes five points adrift of Man City in the title fight.

Liverpool consequently benefitted from Leicester’s defeat as Mohamed Salah’s brace and a goal from Georgino Wijnaldum sent the Reds third with a 3-1 win, despite Craig Dawson firing in a consolatory goal for fifth-placed West Ham.

Down in the relegation zone, Ivan Cavaleiro rescued Fulham a point after goals from Kyle Bartley and Matheus Pereira had overturned Bobby Reid’s opener to give West Brom the lead in an eventual 2-2 draw at The Hawthorns, as the Baggies remain second-bottom behind Fulham who sit 18th in the table.

Brighton remain just above the drop but moved seven points clear of Fulham after Leandro Trossard nicked a 17th minute winner from Pascal Gross’ pass to defeat Tottenham at the Amex Stadium for a second consecutive season.

Elsewhere, Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso scored late into both halves as Chelsea defeated Burnley to claim their first win under Thomas Tuchel, who replaced Frank Lampard as manager earlier in the week.

Aston Villa recovered from a shock midweek defeat at Burnley to edge out Southampton as Ross Barkley headed in a 41st minute winner from Jack Grealish’s cross, with both teams producing 28 shots between them in which 20 shots came from the Saints alone.

Callum Wilson netted a late brace as Newcastle stunned Everton at Goodison Park to end their 11 match winless run in all competitions.

Finally, Eberechi Eze fired in from Jordan Ayew’s pass as Crystal Palace edged out Wolves in a tense mid-table encounter at Selhurst Park.
