Reigning F3 champion, Oscar Piastri has announced that he will race for Prema Racing in Formula Two for 2021 season.
Piastri who is part of Renault F1 academy raced with Prema in F3 in 2020 where he won the title by just three points from Theo Pourchaire after a dramatic season finale in Mugello back in September.
Speaking on his graduation into F2 with Prema who are set to guide Mick Schumacher to the 2020 title, Piastri said; “I’m super excited to be racing with Prema in the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship.
“We had a very successful 2020 season, winning the Formula 3 Championship together, and I’m hoping for another successful year with them. Prema has proven to be the team to beat once again in F2 this year, so I’m extremely happy to be moving into the championship with them. I’m very grateful to stay a part of the Prema family, and I’m looking forward to plenty more pizza and pasta.”
Prema Team Principal, Rene Rosin is “delighted” to retain Piastri and welcome the Aussie into their F2 team, whilst praising the Aussie’s quality, saying; “Not only he is a talented racer with outstanding speed skills. He has a clear understanding of the complexities of today’s motorsports and he is extremely adaptable.
Rosin in particular described the continued partnership with Piastri as “the natural thing…” as he said; “Having witnessed his progress and success throughout the 2020 season, taking our relationship to the next step for the 2021 FIA Formula 2 Championship felt like the natural thing to do and we look forward to having him on-track right from Bahrain.
2021 F2 season however is set to see drastic changes with the number of rounds reduced to eight spanning from Bahrain to Monza before climaxing in Abu Dhabi next December, as part of cost-cutting measures being introduced for 2021 and beyond.
