Matt Beard has parted company with West Ham Women via ‘mutual consent with immediate effect’ following a run of three wins in their opening ten games in all competitions of 2020-21 season.
Beard joined the club as manager in June 2018 as the Hammers turned professional before twice guiding them to survival in Women Super League (WSL) as well as a maiden Women’s FA Cup Final in 2018-19 season, where they lost to Manchester City at Wembley.
West Ham however have struggled to start this season well in the WSL with just four points from their opening seven matches which put them ninth in the table, despite topping their group in the Continental League Cup with two wins and a draw, forcing the club to seek a new ‘forward’ direction with a change of manager.
Speaking on his departure from the club, Beard said; “I have thoroughly enjoyed every minute of my time with West Ham United and, while I am sad to depart, I am proud of the work we have done to grow and develop this team.”
Beard has also penned a personal farewell message for fans with particular praise for how the club has handled the Coronavirus pandemic whilst ensuring that everyone was ‘truly looked after’ during the first lockdown.
West Ham Women iterated ‘their thanks and gratitude’ to Beard for his work to help grow and develop the club throughout his two and half year stint as manager.
Women’s Managing Director, Jack Sullivan was full of praise for Beard’s efforts, saying; “Our growth, from a newly formed professional team taking our first steps into the Women’s Super League to an established side in the top-flight, has been colossal, and Matt has been one of the leading figures in that effort.”
Sullivan also confirmed that Beard’s departure was amicable and that they will share “plenty of unforgettable memories” and wishes Beard “all the best for the future.”
With the WSL now on an international break, Goalkeeping coach – Billy Stewart will share temporary management with first-team coach, Paul McHugh whilst the club immediately launches a ‘thorough and diligent recruitment process’ in their search for a new manager.
