Pep Guardiola Extends Manchester City Reign Until 2023

Pep Guardiola has signed a two-year extension which will see him remain in charge of Manchester City until summer 2023.

Since joining the club in summer 2016, Guardiola has guided City to eight major trophies including two consecutive Premier League titles plus three back-to-back League Cup crowns, on top of the historic domestic treble in 2018-19 season which saw them defeat Watford 6-0 in the FA Cup Final.

Speaking on his decision to remain with the club and extend what is already his longest tenure as a manager at any club, Guardiola said; “Ever since I arrived at Manchester City, I have been made to feel so welcome in the Club and in the city itself – from the players, the staff, the supporters, the people of Manchester and the Chairman and Owner.

“Since then we have achieved a great deal together, scored goals, won games and trophies, and we are all very proud of that success.”

Guardiola therefore feels that overall support is enough for him to continue, saying; “Having that kind of support is the best thing any manager can have. I have everything I could possibly want to do my job well and I am humbled by the confidence the Owner, Chairman, Ferran and Txiki {Begiristain} have shown in me to continue for two more years after this season.”

The ex Barcelona boss however has admitted that there is still work to do as the Champions League continues to elude their grasp after suffering a Quarter-Final exit to Lyon last season, saying; “The challenge for us is to continue improving and evolving, and I am very excited and about helping Manchester City do that.”

Man City Chairman, Khaldoon Mubarak has praised the club’s progress under Guardiola and is looking ahead to further success under the Spaniard, saying; “It is testament to the qualities of the man that Pep Guardiola’s passion and intelligent approach are now woven into the very fabric of the football we play and our culture as Club.

“That impact has been central to our success during his tenure and it is why I am delighted that he shares our view that there is so much more to be achieved both on and off the field.”

Mubarak is of the belief that Guardiola’s contract extension is definitely “the natural next step in a journey which has evolved over many years.”

Man City currently sit tenth in the Premier League with a game in hand on several of their rivals whilst their title defence of the League Cup is still alive with a Quarter-Final tie at Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal set to take place on 22 December 2020.
