Aidy Boothroyd has named a 23-man England U21s squad to take on Andorra and Turkey in this month’s UEFA U21 Euro Qualifiers, as Japhet Tanganga and Curtis Jones receive maiden call-ups.
Boothroyd has handed out maiden U21 call-ups to Tottenham’s Japhet Tanganga and Liverpool’s Curtis Jones in defence and midfield respectively, with Tanganga replacing Bukayo Saka who has been promoted into the senior squad whilst Jones has replaced Todd Cantwell in midfield.
Brentford’s Ellery Balcombe has been recalled in place of Brandon Austin in goal whilst Chelsea’s Reece James handed a recall in place of Bournemouth’s Lloyd Kelly in defence.
Crystal Palace’s summer signing, Eberechi Eze has also been handed a recall after missing last month’s wins over Kosovo and Austria, as the ex QPR player returns to the squad for the first time since last November when he was in the then forward selection.
Up front, Boothroyd has retained his five strikers chosen for last month’s victories over Kosovo and Austria but with the addition of Burnley’s Dwight McNeil, as Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah looks to break the record for most goals scored at England U21s level, which is currently held jointly by Alan Shearer and Francis Jeffers with 13 goals apiece and Nketiah is currently on 12 England U21 goals.
Boothroyd’s selection consequently means that Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood have been snubbed in both of England’s senior and U21s squads following an incident during last month’s senior away Nations League trip to Iceland, which saw the duo sent home early for breaching Coronavirus guidelines.
England U21s will visit Andorra on 7 October 2020 before hosting Turkey at Molineux six days later on 13 October and victories in both matches will secure qualification for UEFA U21s Euro as Group 3 winners.
