2020-21 Carabao Cup Round Three: Morecambe vs Newcastle United

Morecambe will be looking to produce a shock giant killing as they welcome Newcastle United of Premier League to the Mazuma Stadium in their 2020-21 Carabao Cup Third Round clash.

The winner of this tie will visit Newport at Rodney Parade in the Fourth Round next week.

Morecambe have no fresh injury concerns to report ahead of this match, although goalkeeper, Jake Turner is ineligble to face his parent club and will be replaced by Mark Halstead for this match.

Newcastle manager, Steve Bruce is set to rotate his squad with Jamal Lewis set to miss out with a facial injury following Sunday’s defeat against Brighton.

Allan Saint-Maximin (ankle) is also unlikely to feature whilst Martin Dubravka (heel), Paul Dummett (hamstring), Fabian Schar (shoulder), Matthew Longstaff (Quadriceps) and Dwight Gayle (knee) remain absent.

Stat Attack

  • Morecambe lost their only previous meeting against Newcastle which coincidentally came in this competition, losing 2-0 at home in August 2013.
  • The Shrimps have won just one of their last three home League Cup ties (W1, L2).
  • Newcastle are unbeaten in three of their last five away League Cup ties excluding penalty shootouts (W2, D1, L2).

Although Newcastle put in a disappointing performance on Sunday, Brighton have been their league Achilles but this is a great opportunity to put that defeat behind them and crack on with a display which we saw at West Ham in their opening match.

Morecambe however didn’t fare any better at the weekend after suffering a five goal home mauling at Cambridge United’s hands, so there is clearly work to do defensively for both clubs in this fixture in terms of tightening up and making less basic errors.

I however am going for a Magpies win because Newcastle do possess superior quality which should certainly be enough if they turn up and deliver a dominant attacking effort.

Prediction: Morecambe 0-3 Newcastle United

Result: Morecambe 0-7 Newcastle United
