2020-21 Premier League: Week Two – Chelsea vs Liverpool

Chelsea welcome Liverpool to Stamford Bridge in a blockbuster Super Sunday clash between two teams expected to challenge for the title this season.

Having taken opening weekend wins last time out, Chelsea and Liverpool both are looking to continue to build momentum and strike first blood in the first ‘Big Six’ clash of this season.

Timo Werner is set to feature for Chelsea after recovering from a dead leg suffered in their opening weekend victory at Brighton, whilst Jorginho is also expected to feature after being subbed with cramp in the closing moments of that match.

Mateo Kovacic is available for selection after serving an one match ban but Thiago Silva faces a late fitness test to determine whether he is fit enough to be included in the matchday squad.

Marco van Ginkel, Billy Gilmour, Hakim Ziyech (all knee), Ben Chilwell (heel) and Christian Pulisic (hamstring) are ruled out, although Gilmour, Ziyech, Chilwell and Pulisic are expected to return within the next month.

Liverpool will hand late fitness tests to Konstantinos Tsimikas and Xherdan Shaqiri due to respective fitness and muscle concerns.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain remains absent with a knee injury.

Stat Attack

  • Chelsea have won just one of their last six meetings with Liverpool in all competitions including penalty shootouts (W1, D1, L4).
  • Liverpool have taken nine points from their last five league trips to Stamford Bridge (W3, D1, L1).
  • Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino are the only Liverpool players to have scored in both league meetings with Chelsea last season (W2).
  • Chelsea are unbeaten in four of last five opening home matches to a new league season (W2, D2, L1).
  • Liverpool have suffered just one opening away defeat in each of last five Premier League seasons (W3, D1, L1).

Having experienced tough opening matches, Chelsea and Liverpool both know that they must improve defensively if either team are to strike an early blow to their rival’s title hopes.

Chelsea however were impressive against Brighton in terms of dominance and attack and if they can build on that performance here, Liverpool will have a tough battle on their hands because they were lucky that Leeds gave away two penalties otherwise they could of been coming here looking for that first win after a tricky performance last weekend.

I however am expecting this to be a tough scrappy encounter given the attacking quality of both teams but Liverpool do currently seem to have the measure of Chelsea in recent league battles at Stamford Bridge, which might well be the difference.

Prediction: Chelsea 1-2 Liverpool

Result: Chelsea 0-2 Liverpool
