2020-21 Sky Bet Championship: Week One Roundup

This weekend saw the 2020-21 Sky Bet Championship get underway as QPR and Reading moved joint top after the opening round of matches. 

Having blown a Play-Off spot on the final day of last season, Nottingham Forest begun this season in disastrous fashion as Tobias Figueiredo fouled Lyndon Dykes early on the second half. from which the Scottish striker fired in the resulting penalty to put QPR in front.

Ilias Chair then slotted in QPR’s second in stoppage time from Dykes’ blocked shot to put The Hoops joint top alongside Reading, after the Royals defeated Derby through two quick-fire goals from Lucas Joao and Ovie Ejaria respectively.

Bournemouth sit third after edging a five goal thriller against Blackburn who twice fought back to level through Bradley Johnson and Adam Armstrong before Arnaut Danjuma’s 84th minute curler secured Jason Tindall his first win as Cherries’ manager after replacing Eddie Howe over summer.

Tomas Kalas headed in a late winner for Bristol City to send the Robins fourth after defeating Coventry 2-1, in which Jamie Paterson’s first minute opener was cancelled out by Matty Godden’s 33rd minute strike.

Birmingham edged out last season’s losing Play-Off finalists, Brentford after Jeremie Bela flicked in from Ivan Sanchez’s corner to clinch a debut win for Aitor Karanka as he took the competitive reins of Birmingham City for the first time.

Luton round out the top six after edging out Barnsley after James Collins met Pelly-Ruddock Mpanzu’s headed pass and slotted in beyond Jack Walton to clinch a narrow victory in a game of few chances.

Swansea bounced back from losing their Play-Off semi final against Brentford in the second leg through Morgan Gibbs-White’s 53rd minute winner over Preston, tapping in from Jake Bidwell’s cross as the expected promotion contenders collided in an opening weekend clash.

Fellow losing Play-off semi-finalists, Cardiff suffered a disappointing start to the new season, losing to Sheffield Wednesday through first-half goals from Josh Windass and Jordan Rhodes as the Owls made early inroads in overturning a -12 point deficit which was applied in pre-season as a result of being found guilty of breaching financial rules.

Wednesday are however currently appealing the points deduction at time of writing.

Elsewhere, Norwich got their return to the second tier off to a winning start after Teemu Pukki intercepted Richard Stearman’s backpass and found Adam Idah to slot in a 80th minute winner for the Canaries.

Craig Cathcart’s header proved the difference for newly relegated Watford as they begun life back in the Championship with a narrow victory over Neil Warnock’s Middlesbrough in a scrappy encounter at Vicarage Road, which opened the season on Friday night.

Championship newcomers, Wycombe Wanderers tasted a late defeat after Michael Ihiewke headed in a 92nd minute winner for Rotherham, who return to the division after an one season absence.

Finally, Millwall were held to a goalless draw by Stoke City in the only draw of the opening weekend to the new season.
