Valtteri Bottas has signed a new one-year deal to keep him at Mercedes until end of next season.
The new agreement sees Bottas remain with the Silver Arrows for a fifth consecutive season since unexpectedly joining in 2017, following Nico Rosberg’s decision to retire at end of 2016 season.
Speaking of his decision to sign a new contract, Bottas was ‘very happy” to stay and ‘build on the success we’ve enjoyed together already.’
Bottas also spoke of his progress across the last few seasons, saying; “These past few years have been all about continuous improvement, working on every aspect of my performance.
“I am confident that today I’m the strongest I’ve ever been, but I can always raise the bar. Mercedes embraces the same philosophy; They always want to get better and are always hungry for more.”
Mercedes Team Principal, Toto Wolff praised Bottas as ‘hard-working’ and ‘straightforward’ who is currently at his ‘strongest on and off track since joining Mercedes three years ago.
Wolff also iterated his belief that Mercedes have the best driver pairing, saying; “I’m confident that we have the strongest driver pairing in F1 today and signing Valtteri is an important first step in retaining this strength for the future.”
Mercedes however are yet to tie Bottas’ teammate and current Championship leader, Lewis Hamilton down to a new deal although it is expected to be a formality given that Ferrari and McLaren have already announced their 2021 driver lineups.
This announcement also likely shuts the door on any possibility of Sebastian Vettel joining the team, with the German now looking destined for Racing Point in place of Sergio Perez next season.
