Hungarian Grand Prix organisers have announced that this year’s race will go ahead without spectators.
Releasing a statement, Hungarian GP organisers said: “The Hungaroring team has been waiting until the very end and is still working with the international right holder, but it has now become clear that we cannot hold the 35th Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix in front of spectators despite all our efforts.”
Organisers pointed out that the decision was necessary in order to protect the “health and well-being…” of fans and circuit staff alike.
Race organisers however have confirmed that they are currently “open to any solution in order to host the Grand Prix again this year,” whilst working alongside the international promoter on the “best possible solution,”
In regards to tickets for this year’s race, fans will have the option of transferring their pre-purchased tickets to 2021 or request a full refund, although the circuit “kindly ask for your patience as we deal with this unprecedented situation.”
A further update for ticket purchasers will follow as soon as possible and more information will be available at hungaroring.hu in due course.
Hungarian Government have meanwhile announced that mass gatherings will be banned until at least 15 August, meaning that the race could move from its current scheduled date of 2 August to later that month unless the decision is eventually taken to cancel this year’s Grand Prix.
This announcement comes after an eventful week in which the French Grand Prix was cancelled, before Silverstone announced that the British Grand Prix would definitely take place behind closed doors.
F1 however is targeting a July start to this season with the Austrian Grand Prix before a hectic jaunt across the world, finishing in Abu Dhabi in mid December.
