2019-20 Premier League: Week 24 – Crystal Palace vs Southampton

Crystal Palace welcome Southampton to Selhurst Park as both teams look to continue their battle for a top ten finish.

Palace could mathematically climb as high as seventh with victory whilst Southampton will leapfrog their hosts with victory and move up as high as ninth.

Crystal Palace have no fresh injury concerns to report from Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Manchester City.

Max Meyer (ankle), Luka Milivojevic (suspension), Christian Benteke (strain), Jeffrey Schlupp, Andros Townsend (both groin), Patrick van Anholt and Mamadou Sakho (both hamstring) are all ruled out.

Southampton will be without Jan Bednarek due to an Achilles issue, which shouldn’t sideline him for too long.

Yan Valery remains absent through a viral infection which has kept him out for the last month.

Stat Attack

  • Crystal Palace have avoided defeat in three of their last five meetings against Southampton (W1, D2, L2).
  • Each of their last two meetings have finished 1-1 but both came at St Mary’s Stadium, with Palace initially leading on both occasions.
  • Three of ten previous Premier League meetings at Selhurst Park has finished in draws (W2, D3, L5).
  • Palace are yet to win a penalty in this Premier League fixture after 21 previous meetings.
  • Coming into this round, no defender has made more clearances than Southampton’s Jan Bednarek who has made 127 clearances in 23 league appearances this season.

Prediction

This is a tough one because Southampton look very difficult to stop when in possession, whilst Palace are somehow still snatching points despite their injury crisis so will again be defensive minded.

I therefore am predicting a tough game but Southampton might just have the edge here if they’re still sharp enough, after their crushing defeat from two goals up at the weekend which might dent their confidence a bit.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 1-2 Southampton

Result: Crystal Palace 0-2 Southampton
