Aston Villa vs Leeds United

Aston Villa welcome Leeds United to Villa Park for the first of this weekend’s Sky Bet Championship games.

Currently fourth and five points off the second automatic promotion spot, Villa cannot afford to drop any points in their final four games or they will have to face the play off lottery.

Team news

John Terry is a doubt for Aston Villa after injuring his ankle last weekend during the 2-1 defeat at Norwich City.

Birkir Bjarnason (back) and Axel Tuanzebe is also doubtful after suffering injuries during midweek win over Cardiff City.

Defender, Alan Hutton is expected not to feature as he recovers from a hamstring injury.

Leeds are currently in a injury crisis with several regulars out of this match with injury.

Some of the major absentees include captain, Liam Cooper (leg) and vice captain, Luke Ayling (ankle).

From midfield, Adam Forshaw (calf) and Eunan O’ Kane are amongst those ruled out, whilst Tyler Roberts is the only striker missing.

Left back, Gaetano Berardi is still suspended and won’t be back till next season.

Since beating Wolverhampton Wanderers at start of March, Aston Villa have taken seven points from a possible 18 in last six games.

During that run, they have scored six goals and conceded seven.

Leeds come here on a run of one win in eight, scoring in five of those games.

Stat Attack

  • Three of last five meetings have been drawn with both teams taking a 2-0 win from the two non drawn matches.
  • Pablo Hernandez has scored in four of Leeds’ last six games.
  • Steve Bruce has never lost a home match against Leeds United as a manager and have faced a different Leeds manager each time.
  • Leeds have taken just three points out of a possible 33 from games against the current top six. One of those points came in the reverse fixture at Elland Road when drew 1-1.

Where Can Game be Won or Lost?

Per Game Average Aston Villa (home) Leeds United (away)
Corners 5.57 4.14
Fouls 11.95 11.9
Shots 13.86 11.05
Shots on Target 4.86 3.43
Goals 1.9 1.24
Yellow Cards 1.1 1.81
Red Cards 2 4
Goals per First Half % 42.5 46.2
Goals per Second Half % 57.5 53.8

This game might not look to be the most entertaining judging by the shot and goal averages.

We instead could very well see a fiery clash between two fallen European giants, given their evenly matched foul average and both have a habit of seeing red.

In summary, don’t expect goals but could see fireworks instead.

Aston Villa need the win but Leeds will be tough to beat and both teams look evenly matched all over the pitch.

For that reason, I can see another draw.

Prediction: Aston Villa 1-1 Leeds United

Result: Aston Villa 1-0 Leeds United
