Southampton vs Liverpool

This weekend’s Super Sunday finishes with Virgil van Dijk making his return to Southampton with Liverpool.

Southampton know that if Huddersfield and Newcastle both win their Super Sunday games, they could enter this match sat in relegation zone.

Liverpool meanwhile need a win as they look to keep pace with the battle for a top four finish.

Team news

Joe Gomez is a doubt for Liverpool.

Southampton got no fresh injury worries and could name an unchanged side from last time out.

Manolo Gabbiadini is still nursing a hip issue whilst Charlie Austin remains out.

Liverpool meanwhile have Ragnar Klavan and Alberto Moreno back from muscle injuries.

Joe Gomez is expected to remain in the physio room with a minor knee problem.

Since losing to Crystal Palace in first game of 2018, Southampton are currently unbeaten, taking two cup wins and six league points from a possible 12.

Liverpool have lost just once in their last 17 league games but their three league defeats this season have all come on the road.

Stat Attack

  • Southampton are unbeaten in four of last six home league games against Liverpool
  • The Saints are currently unbeaten in four league matches for first time since 2015-16 when they had three separate unbeaten runs of six games that season.
  • Liverpool have failed to score in just three of their away matches in all competitions this season.
  • Having scored just 42 away goals across their competitions last season, Jurgen Klopp’s side have already netted 45 times this season away from Anfield.

Where will game be won or lost?

Per game average (home/away) Southampton (home) Liverpool (away)
Corners 6.93 5.31
Fouls 10.29 9.62
Shots 14 15.85
Shots on Target 3.64 5.77
Goals 1.14 2.46
Yellow cards 1.07 1.38
Red cards 0 1

Southampton might better the corner average but Liverpool look stronger in attack as well as defensively.

The Saints however are slightly stronger in discipline with no reds and have averaged less yellow cards at home than Liverpool have done away from Anfield.

How have ex Saints players fared on return to St Marys?

Since Southampton returned to the top flight in 2012, Liverpool have managed to sign six stars from the Saints.

Ahead of Van Dijk’s return, here is how the five others have fared on their league returns to St Marys after signing for Liverpool.

Player Result Score
Adam Lallana W 0-2
Rickie Lambert W 0-2
Dejan Lovren W 0-2
Nathaniel Clyne L 3-2
Sadio Mane D 0-0

Lallana, Lambert and Lovren’s return to Southampton came in 2014-15 season before Clyne joined them a year later.

Mane then followed them ahead of the 2016-17 season but none are yet to score on their return to St Marys.

This should be an exciting match, despite Liverpool having a Champions League game on Wednesday.

Klopp’s Reds will attack as they usually do but given Southampton’s form, I can see a draw here.

Prediction: Southampton 1-1 Liverpool

Jake predicts: Southampton 0-3 Liverpool

Result: Southampton 0-2 Liverpool
