Charlton manager, Nathan Jones feels “pride” in his team’s 2-1 victory over Sheffield United.
Matty Godden’s 79th-minute winner saw Charlton end their 11-match winless streak with a 2-1 victory over Sheffield Utd at The Valley which put them 19th in the Championship, after Millenic Alli’s opening goal was cancelled out by Jordan Ayew in the first half.
“It’s only one win, so we mustn’t get carried away,” quipped Jones to cafc.co.uk as he spoke of the pleasure at stopping the rut. “But considering the pressure we were under, the noise around us and the response we produced today, I can only feel pride.”
“Once they cross the white line, all I can do is drive them from the sideline, give them tactical information at half-time and make good substitutions. They had to implement it, and they did today.”
Jones also praised Godden for his impact as he added: “His movement is brilliant; he’s never lazy. He’s takes pride in it. He wants it at the back of the net. That’s why he’s had the career he has, that’s why he’s still scoring, and that’s why we love him.”
Midfielder, Conor Coventry also drew praise for his performance as Jones continued: “His passing and variation in his play were excellent. I’m really proud of him because he stepped up. Today he was outstanding.”
Charlton’s win however came just before the final international break of 2026 so Jones is wary of the need to use the result as a base to keep building once the league campaign resumes on 21 November.
“We need to do good work, demand from the players and drive them. Then we need a crowd behind us, driving them on, and we can have days like this.”
“We’re on a journey; there’ll be tough times, but we have to keep moving forward. Today we took a step forward and arrested that momentum.”
