Sunderland meet Brentford in a tasty all top-flight showdown in the fourth round of the 2026-27 Carabao Cup.
Victory will see Regis Le Bris’ Black Cats reach the Quarter-Finals of this competition for the first time since the 2021-22 season.
Brentford meanwhile are looking to advance to the Quarter-Finals for a third consecutive season.
Team News
Kevin Danso is available for Sunderland following completion of his one-match domestic ban, which saw him miss their 0-0 Premier League draw at home to Leeds on Sunday.
Nordi Mukiele is available to feature in this tie after he suffered a minor throat injury during that game in an incident with teammate, Luke O’Nien.
Wilson Isidor (knock) and Thomas Meunier (hamstring) could be fit if pass late fitness checks, but Dan Ballard (hamstring) and Romaine Mundle (knee) remain ruled out.
Brentford will welcome Vitaly Janelt back from his one-match suspension in their 1-1 draw at Hull on Sunday.
Yehor Yarmoliuk (suspension), Josh Dasilva (hamstring), Antoni Milambo (knock) and Kaye Furo (metatarsal) remain absent.
When is Kick-Off?
Sunderland host Brentford at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday 28 October at 7:45pm GMT, live on Sky Sports+ in the UK.
Stat Attack
- Sunderland lost 4-3 in their only previous League Cup meeting against Brentford in October 1960 at the second round stage of that season’s competition.
- Brentford are making their first League Cup visit to Sunderland.
- Sunderland have won four of their last six League Cup home ties against top-flight opposition (W4, L2).
- Brentford have won three of their last six away ties against top-flight opposition (W3, L3), although they needed penalties to beat West Brom in the third round in September 2020 after a 2-2 draw.
Prediction
Having scraped a point against Leeds in absolutely difficult conditions on Sunday, it is hard to fairly judge Sunderland’s performance coming into this game off the back of that result other than the fact that they need to be more composed and ruthlessly clinical in their finishing.
I guess the same could be arguably said of Brentford given that the conditions affected every part of the country but they at least are scoring goals consistently and unbeaten on the road, although their two away wins this season both came in this competition which will give them some belief.
With a Quarter-Final spot on the line, I expect both teams to be strong but Brentford for me should have the edge given their better attacking quality and form.
Prediction: Sunderland 1-2 Brentford
