Jake Beesley felt “relief” at scoring his first goal for Bradford in their 1-1 away draw at Reading.

Beesley’s fourth-minute header on his tenth appearance for the Bantams since his summer move from Burton Albion put the Bantams in control, until Udoka Godwin-Malife equalised for the Royals from a long throw in their 1-1 draw at the Select Car Leasing Stadium.

The result also meant that Bradford slipped to second on goal difference in League One with a game in hand after Plymouth Argyle beat Leyton Orient 2-0 in East London.

Beesley post-match told Bradford City’s website that the goal came as “relief” after having failed to score in his first nine appearances, as he spoke of the team’s effort in training to improve their wide play.

“It is a bit of a relief. It was amazing to score in front of the fans, it was a great feeling. I would have rather taken three points over scoring though.

“We work on that in training all the time, getting down the sides and combining. It was a great ball in from Bobby, and it was perfect for me; I just had to guide it in.

“Getting off the mark today was an amazing feeling. I saw my dad in the crowd, so it was an incredible moment.”

Beesley’s goal came in the club’s first match since Graham Alexander left to take charge of Preston North End, and the 29-year-old was pleased to see the Bradford fans continue to be in full voice motivating the players from the stands.

“Coming to Bradford, it has been a step up in terms of the size of the fan base from what I am used to. They are behind us every time we play, whether it is at Valley Parade or away from home.

“They really do give you extra motivation to try and win the game.

“At times when we are under the cosh, you hear the supporters get behind us, and it really does spur you on.”
