Anthony Scully feels that scoring on debut for Exeter City “is one of the best feelings” in his career.

Scully netted a 51st-minute winner from George Birch’s pass – just hours after his free transfer was announced – to hand the Grecians a 1-0 victory at home against Rotherham, which saw Exeter climb to 20th in the League Two table and extended their unbeaten home form to five matches.

Speaking post-match, the 27-year-old forward explained to the club website that he had dreamed of scoring on his first appearance for the club, but was impressed at their defensive effort in the closing stages.

“That’s what I went to bed last night dreaming of, it was great to get the goal, but more importantly the three points and the performance from the group.

“I think especially in those last 20 minutes, I couldn’t believe the defending we did, the back four were unbelievable. How together we were as a group, we didn’t give them anything all game. So credit has to go to all the lads that last 20 minutes.”

Scully also felt that his debut goal is already one of his career highlights after having spent three clubs looking for a new club following his release from Shrewsbury Town at the end of June.

“That feeling when I scored is up there with one of the best feelings I’ve had you in my life because of the tough summer I had. A lot of things went on last season that me and them know what truly went on.

“A lot of people don’t know what actually went on, and it left my family in a difficult position in the summer, and to come here now is one of the best feelings I’ve had in my life.”
