McLaren’s Lando Norris has apologised for calling for Franco Colapinto to receive a race ban after their collision in the 2026 Azerbaijan Grand Prix.
Norris was spun out of the race on a safety car restart on lap 36 after Colapinto locked his brakes into the first corner, which saw the Argentine clatter into his Alpine teammate, Pierre Gasly who tagged Norris into a race-ending spin into the barriers.
The reigning world champion subsequently called for Colapinto to be banned which triggered a wave of abuse from Colapinto’s fans, but Norris has now issued a public apology for his remark in the heat of the moment and is excited for the Bahrain GP in Sepang, Malaysia from 2-4 October.
“Tough weekend overall in Baku and of course a disappointing and early end to the race.
“After the race, I sent Franco a message apologising for the comments I made that I simply should not have said. I know better and emotions were running high but that is not an excuse, it was wrong of me.
“I’ve made mistakes of my own over the years and I know this is very much a part of racing and fighting on the limit. Me and Franco came to a good understanding, are still good friends and are both excited to get back racing this weekend.”
