Wolves forward, Adam Armstrong believes that his team “want promotion” straight back to the Premier League.
Wolves currently sit fourth in the Championship after seven games – with a match in hand after their home clash against Portsmouth was postponed to 20 October.
Armstrong believes that the Old Gold is keen to claim promotion straight back into the top flight after relegation at the end of last season, as he reflected on their start to the season to wolves.co.uk.
“You look at the squad we’ve got and it’s not a Championship squad, there’s quality all over the pitch. Myself, I’m 29, I’ve been in the Championship for years, it’s something I love. All the boys want promotion because it’s the best feeling in the world, I had it at Southampton. We try to drill that message in every day, being the best we can be.
“There are no walk overs, in this league, you have to turn up every game, and I’m trying to get that into the boys. Sunday was excellent, the grind. The last ten minutes, when you’re digging in, that’s what you need in this league.”
Armstrong has scored two goals in 10 appearances across all competitions but the 29-year-old iterated that persistence is key to converting chances, especially after converting just one of their six shots on target into a match-winning goal at West Bromwich Albion.
“I always speak about it with the lads, that I have to put in the work at the front end of the pitch – the moment I stop running is the moment I won’t get chances. I learned that when I was younger, you have to keep going, and we created a lot of chances on Sunday. If I stop working, the team stops working, because it leads from the front.
“We’ve got to get our relationships right. It takes time, it’s still new, a lot of new relationships on the pitch. I have to know when to drop in and when to stay on the top line to get the runs going.”
Armstrong added that home advantage gave the team a motivational boost to get the win over their Black Country rivals, as he complimented the Baggies’ Max O’Leary for his saves.
“We knew what the game was going to be. It’s a massive derby, so we knew the fans would give us an extra lift in the end, and I thought they were brilliant throughout the game.
“The main thing was to get the win, and I thought the lads were excellent on and off the ball, creating chances, and their ‘keeper pulled off some ‘worldies’, so on another day it’s three or four, but I’m very proud of the boys.
“We knew we were doing really well and we just had to stick to the game plan. We were creating a lot of chances, but fair play to their ‘keeper. We stuck at it, stuck to the press, got it right at the right time and Lopez does what he does.”
