Trident have signed James Wharton to their driver line-up for the 2027 F2 season.
Wharton’s promotion comes despite a 17th-placed championship finish in F3 this season for PREMA, during which he won the Barcelona-Catalunya Sprint then registered a further podium finish with second in the Spanish Sprint at the season finale round in Madrid, Spain.
The 20-year-old Australian also boasts F2 experience after he previously drove for Trident in the penultimate round of last season, which saw him retire from the Qatar Sprint then finished 19th in the Feature Race in Losail.
Trident’s Team Manager, Giacomo Ricci is “very happy” to sign Wharton for his first full campaign in F2 and feels that his second full season in F3 has given him further learnings that he can bring into F2 as a base to build upon with the team.
“We got to know him at the end of 2025, when he made his debut with us in F2, and since then we have continued to closely monitor his development. James has demonstrated speed, talent, and great determination.
“The season just ended allowed him to gain further experience, and we are confident that the work we will do together will enable him to take a significant step forward.”
