Aston Villa have signed defender, Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton for £30m.
Harwood-Bellis’ move has ended his three-year stint at Southampton – having initially spent the 2023-24 season loan before he signed permanently in 2024, across which he scored 12 goals in 134 appearances and helped the Saints win promotion via the 2023-24 Championship Play-Offs to the Premier League.
The Saints however were relegated straight back to the second tier at the end of the 2024-25 season, before they were expelled from last season’s play-offs for a spying scandal.
Harwood-Bellis however found himself mired in his own controversy within the scandal after he taunted Middlesbrough midfielder – Aidan Morris with a binoculars celebration in the second leg of their play-off semi-final, whilst he was also accused of mocking a speech impediment by Luke Ayling.
Ayling however opted against pushing for disciplinary action after Harwood-Bellis subsequently apologised for his behaviour just hours later.
Villa nevertheless was impressed by the 24-year-old’s on-pitch performances and after negotiations, they agreed to meet Southampton’s £30m asking price, in a deal which consisted of a £25m fixed fee plus a further £5m in add-ons.
Harwood-Bellis has signed a five-year contract until June 2031 at Villa, where he will wear the number … shirt this season.
Harwood-Bellis began his career at Manchester City’s Academy and proceeded to manage one goal in eight first-team appearances following his breakthrough in September 2019, as he started in City’s 3-0 away third-round victory at Preston North End in the 2019-20 Carabao Cup which City won.
During his time at City, Harwood-Bellis was loaned to Blackburn in the second half of the 2020-21 season, which was followed by loan stints with Anderlecht then Stoke in the following season.
He then spent 2022-23 season at Burnley and helped them gain promotion to the Premier League as Championship champions with one goal in 35 appearances, before he made the initial loan move to Southampton in September 2023 before he signed permanently the following summer.
At international level, Harwood-Bellis represents England and was part of their 2023 UEFA Under-21 Euro title-winning squad, before he scored his first senior goal for the National Team on his debut in a 5-0 home win over Republic of Ireland in November 2024 in the UEFA Nations League.
He hasn’t since received a call-up to the England squad following Thomas Tuchel’s arrival in January 2025.
