Coventry City have signed Nigerian forward, Taiwo Awoniyi from Nottingham Forest for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Awoniyi’s move to the CBS Arena has ended his four-year spell at Forest where he scored 23 goals in 103 appearances and helped the Tricky Trees finish seventh in the 2024-25 Premier League, which secured European qualification.

Forest initially qualified for last season’s UEFA Conference League but was controversially promoted to the Europa League, where they reached the semi-finals only to lose to eventual champions, Aston Villa.

The 29-year-old though only managed four goals in 18 appearances across last season, which led Forest to accept an undisclosed transfer fee for him from Coventry.

Having signed an undisclosed contract, Awoniyi revealed that he is “very happy” to join Frank Lampard’s Sky Blues and is “very excited” for the new season with his new teammates, as Coventry return to the Premier League after a 25-year absence

“I’m really looking forward to working with my new teammates, I have seen how amazing they have been last season, coming up from the Championship, they were incredible and now I am just excited to join them and get started for the new season.”

Awoniyi began his career at Liverpool but enjoyed loans at FSV Frankfurt, NEC across 2015-16 & 16-17 seasons in which he scored four goals in 36 combined appearances.

He then enjoyed a successful loan at Mouscron in 2017-18 season with 10 goals in 31 appearances but struggled on loan at Gent the next season with three goals in 22 appearances, which led to a recall and loan back to Mouscron where he delivered 11 goals in 16 appearances.

One goal in 12 appearances at Mainz 05 followed in the 2019-20 season, before he joined Union Berlin on an initial loan for the 2020-21 season where he produced five goals in 22 appearances, which led him to sign the following summer and he went on to net 20 goals in 43 appearances in the 21-22 season.

His performances that campaign led Forest to sign him in June 2022.

Awoniyi represents Nigeria at international level with two goals in 10 appearances.
