Cambridge United have signed 22-year-old goalkeeper, Gabriel Breeze from Carlisle United for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Breeze’s move has seen him leave his hometown club to jump up two divisions from the National League to join the Us in League One, having produced one assist and 24 clean sheets in 84 senior appearances.

Last season saw him keep 17 clean sheets in 46 National League appearances in a breakthrough season in the fifth tier of English football.

Speaking to cambridgeunited.com about his move, Breeze explained that manager, Neil Harris persuaded him of the club’s ambitions and desire for him to be part of their long-term plans.

“When I spoke to the gaffer and everyone at the club, they sold it in a really good way. Cambridge United is going in the right direction and has a lot of ambition – it’s the perfect move for me.

“It’s nice to feel wanted, and I can’t wait to get started, work hard, and reward the club for bringing me in.”

Harris added: “We are delighted to welcome Gabriel to the football club. He’s a player we’ve tracked for a while now – a very young goalkeeper who already possesses valuable experience, not only in the National League last year, but also in League Two the season before.

“For a player so young to already have that level of experience shows the massive potential for further development in him, both as a lad and as a goalkeeper.

“We feel that over a longer-term contract, he’ll gain great experience and the opportunity to grow, but we also know he has the capability to step in and play straight away.

“We look forward to helping him on his pathway to reaching the higher levels of the football pyramid.”
