Aaron Pressley’s 47th-minute strike saw Walsall eliminate Bristol City at Ashton Gate in a 1-0 first-round cupset in the 2026-27 Carabao Cup.
Pressley met Reece Smith’s cross and fired past Sam Tickle to seal a narrow victory for the League Two side over their Championship hosts.
Walsall are now through to the second round which will take place across 25-27 August, with the draw scheduled for Monday 10 August at 19:20pm BST, live on Sky Sports Football in the UK.
Having spent heavily over the summer following Michael Skubala’s appointment as Head Coach, Bristol City unsurprisingly began on the front foot as Jason Knight and Rob Dickie put headers wide whilst Max Bird fired wide of the right corner in the opening eight minutes.
Summer signings, Sam Greenwood, Lorent Tolaj and Jed Wallace then saw shots blocked as the Robins continued to pile on the pressure against a resilient Walsall defence, whilst Courtney Clarke fired the Saddlers’ first shot wide in the 10th minute.
Clarke, Pressley and Isaac Moore saw further chances denied by Sam Tickle as Walsall enjoyed sporadic opportunities amidst Bristol City’s dominance, in which Wallace and Tolaj saw shots saved by Jed Ward in the 25th and 41st minutes respectively.
Walsall’s first-half resilience paid off just two minutes into the second half as Pressley smashed Smith’s cross on his right foot into the top right corner to break the deadlock on a quick counter-attack.
Wallace wasted a chance to equalise for the Robins in the 51st minute as he dragged a shot wide, before Smith and Pressley saw shots blocked.
Dom Ballard on debut saw his 61st-minute shot blocked before Cameron Pring and Greenwood failed to beat Ward as the goalkeeper saved Pring’s effort, whilst Greenwood fired wide in more frustration for the hosts who lacked a clinical end product.
George Tanner fired over the bar in the 74th minute before Scott Twine’s shot was saved four minutes later as Bristol City continued to push for a late equaliser.
Harrison Burke however nearly killed off the hosts’ hopes of a comeback with a 81st-minute header from Mason Hancock’s cross, but the 23-year-old defender headed wide.
Bristol City though refused to give up as Bird fired wide then Twine and Lisav Eissat saw shots saved by Ward whilst Knight saw a 90th-minute header blocked, but Walsall clung on to avoid a sixth first-round exit in eight seasons.
