Chelsea have signed forward, Danny Welbeck from Brighton & Hove Albion for an undisclosed transfer fee.
Xabi Alonso’s decision to bring Welbeck to Chelsea came after he identified a need for experienced reinforcement in attack to blend in with his youthful squad, with the Blues and Brighton able to quickly reach agreement on an undisclosed transfer fee for the 35-year-old forward.
Welbeck has signed a two-year contract at Stamford Bridge until June 2028 with the move coming off the back of his most successful season as a player, in which he scored 14 goals in all competitions to help Brighton finish eighth in the Premier League and qualify for UEFA Conference League.
“When you hear of the interest from Chelsea, it’s something that fills you with such immense pride,” explained Welbeck as he spoke of his privilege to be wanted by the club in the twilight years of his playing career. “Knowing the history of Chelsea, it’s a club that wants to win trophies and is pushing to do that every single season.
“I’m really honoured to come to a club of this stature at what feels like a really exciting time. I know a few of the boys already and I’ve had fantastic conversations with the manager and already feel that connection.
“I’ve got that fire in my belly and I’m ready to give it everything for this club to make everyone at Chelsea, and the supporters, proud.”
Brighton Head Coach, Fabian Hurzeler meanwhile paid tribute to Welbeck in Brighton’s public statement as he praised the forward for his professional attitude and desire to set standards whilst providing support to himself as he adapted to English football.
“It’s always sad to see a player and a person of Danny’s stature leave, and we are all sorry to see him go.
“Danny has been a pleasure to work with from the moment I arrived at the club. His professionalism, attitude and commitment set the standard here every day, and he has been a fantastic support to me personally.
“As well as the quality he brought on the pitch, he was an important leader within the squad and a role model for our younger players. We are grateful for everything he has done for the club and wish him all the very best for the future.”
Welbeck began his senior career at Manchester United where he graduated through their academy to score 29 goals in 142 senior appearances between 2008 – 2014, during which he spent the second half of 2009-10 season on loan at Preston where he scored twice in eight appearances.
He went on to spend the 2010-11 season on loan at Sunderland which saw him net six goals in 28 appearances before he returned to Utd,
Across his time at United, Welbeck helped the Red Devils win two League Cup and Community Shield titles apiece plus 2012-13 Premier League and 2008 FIFA Club World Cup titles.
September 2014 saw Welbeck move to Arsenal where he delivered 32 goals in 126 appearances amidst three injury-affected seasons, and helped them to the FA Cup title in two of his first three seasons in North London alongside the 2017 Community Shield title.
Arsenal subsequently released Welbeck in summer 2019 and he soon joined Watford, yet struggled to make much impact as the Hornets suffered relegation to the Championship with just three goals in 20 appearances.
Brighton however swooped for him in October 2020 and he since went on to consolidate himself as a first-team regular with 51 goals and 18 assists in 201 appearances, which included Brighton’s highest league finish of sixth in the 2022-23 season to earn European qualification for the first time.
The Seagulls the next season went on to reach the Round of 16 in the Europa League, in which he scored one goal in four appearances within that competition; as he featured in two group matches then both of their Round 16 matches in which he got their consolatory goal in a 1-0 home win as they lost 4-1 to AS Roma on aggregate.
Welbeck represented England between 2011 – 18 in which he scored 16 goals in 42 appearances, and featured in the tournament squad at UEFA Euro 2012 then 2014 & 18 FIFA World Cups – of which they finished fourth at the latter tournament.
