Manchester City have signed goalkeeper, Pierce Charles from Sheffield Wednesday for an undisclosed transfer fee, and loaned him to QPR for the 2026-27 season.
Charles’ move sees him return to City after a five-year absence following his move to the Owls in 2021, where he graduated through their academy to make 36 senior appearances across the last three seasons despite their slide into League One at the end of last season.
Following his return to City, the 20 year-old Northern Ireland international is pleased to return to his former club.
“To be back at Manchester City is a very special and proud moment both for me and my family,” explained Charles on his decision to move back to his former club and go out on loan to Championship club, QPR for the 2026-27 season.
“I know first hand what a special club City is and I am so excited about looking to the future.
“City take the development of young players very seriously so I know that my loan to QPR will only help me grow and improve as a player too.
“I’ll now give everything I can for a successful season in the Championship before hopefully returning to Manchester a better goalkeeper.”
City’s Director of Football, Hugo Viana added that the club had monitored Charles’ progress at Sheffield Wednesday and is now “… delighted to welcome him back to Manchester City.”
Viana proceeded to explain that Sheffield Wednesday’s struggles has been valuable learnings for Charles but believes that his youthful experience will motivate him to keep developing his game.
“Pierce has already learned a lot during his time at Sheffield Wednesday but is still very young and hungry to now further progress and develop.
“He also knows the Club and is very much aligned with the values we all share.”
Charles will spend the season at QPR which he believes “fits” the next chapter in his career and is confident that he can help QPR deliver on their potential as he explained in his first interview with the club’s website.
“With the squad as well, it looks like a promising squad, plenty of young players, and when I played here last season, the fans showed me how loud and how good the atmosphere can really be.”
Charles also spoke of feeling like a goalkeeper who has many qualities strengthened by his experiences at Hillsborough last season.
“I would like to think of myself as an all-round goalkeeper.
“I think my super strength is probably the ball at my feet.
“I feel like last season, with how tough the season was for me and the team, I thought I showed that I can also make saves and deal with the usual goalkeeping stuff as well.”
