Tottenham Hotspur have completed the £100m signing of Italian midfielder, Sandro Tonali from Newcastle United.
Confirmation of Tonali’s move to North London came days after the third anniversary of the now 26 year-old’s move to Newcastle from AC Milan.
Across his three seasons on Tyneside amidst a betting-related ban in his first season, Tonali scored 10 goals in 110 appearances for the Magpies – during which he helped them claim the 2024-25 Carabao Cup title to end a 70-year domestic trophy drought.
His performances ultimately led Spurs to try and lure him as part of their midfield revamp under Roberto De Zerbi, but saw initial bids rejected until Newcastle accepted a £100m offer which was made up of a £92.5m fixed fee plus £7.5m in add-ons.
Upon confirmation of his move, Tonali revealed that he had a near two-hour chat with De Zerbi who persuaded him to make the switch and praised the fans for having provided a great atmosphere whenever he faced them with Newcastle – even despite Spurs’ difficult campaign last season.
“I’m very happy to be here. When I arrived at the Club today, it felt fantastic. People said about there being four or five clubs – there was only one.
“I spoke to the Head Coach for close to two hours about the Club, the fans, the stadium and our football. It was like magic because I knew immediately that I had to sign for Tottenham. I’ve played against Tottenham a few times and always found a great atmosphere made by great fans. I can’t wait to start the season.”
De Zerbi added: “Sandro is a special player and a great signing for our Club.
“I have followed him for a long time, as he came through the youth system at my hometown club, Brescia, and I’m so happy to be working with him now. Given his qualities, there was a lot of interest in Sandro this summer. However, he was very clear in his desire to join Tottenham, and I know our fans will love what he brings to the team.”
Tonali will wear the number 16 shirt this season at Tottenham.
