Bristol City have sacked Gerhard Struber as manager and appointed Roy Hodgson as his replacement until the conclusion of 2025-26 season.

Struber’s sacking came after a run of 15 points in their last 16 league matches saw them slide down to 16th in the Championship table and all but mathematically out of contention for the promotion play-offs.

That run also saw the Robins suffer a shock fourth-round exit at Port Vale in the FA Cup.

Bristol City’s Chief Executive Officer, Charlie Boss placed on record the club’s “thank” to Struber and his assistant, Bernd Eibler for their services since June 2025.

“I would like to thank Gerhard and Bernd for their hard work over the past nine months and we wish them all the best.”

Boss proceeded to explain that the decision to appoint Hodgson as Struber’s replacement for the remainder of the season is about setting standards and values, which will form a base for future success under a new permanent manager.

“Roy’s appointment is about more than the results of the next seven games. Over the remainder of the season, he will help us set the standards and values at the club that we will need to be successful going forwards.

“Roy is a vastly experienced coach who has achieved and won at the highest level. He will support me, our players and our football staff as we build towards achieving our potential.”

Hodgson’s appointment marks his return to Bristol City after a spell in charge in 1982 and first managerial role since he left Crystal Palace in February 2024, with the 78-year old energised about his opportunity to return to the dugout on an interim basis until the end of this season.

“I have had great conversations with the Board and I am really excited by the opportunity to help until the end of the season. We will get straight to work and look for a positive performance on Good Friday.”

Boss confirmed that the club are currently recruiting a Sporting Director who will assist in their recruitment of the new permanent manager.
