Middlesbrough have signed winger, Jeremy Sarmiento from Brighton & Hove Albion on an initial loan deal.

Sarmiento spent the first half of this season on loan at Italy’s US Cremonese but made just seven appearances, which led Brighton to recall him and have subsequently loaned him out to Boro until the end of this season with an option to sign him permanently in the summer.

Speaking to mfc.co.uk about his move, Sarmiento is happy to be back in English football as he praised Middlesbrough for their ambitions.

“I’m very pleased to finally be here. The ambition from everyone at the club is what attracted me to Boro.

“I’m hungry to get going and I can’t wait to show people what I can do.”

Sarmiento is Boro’s third signing of the window after Leo Castledine and Fin Munroe.

The 23-year-old Ecuador winger previously played for Charlton and Benfica at youth level before he joined Brighton in July 2021, and went on to score one goal in 21 appearances for the Seagulls.

He however spent the 2023-24 season on loan in the Championship at West Brom where he scored twice in 21 appearances, before he was recalled and loaned to Ipswich in January 2024 which saw him produce four goals in 22 appearances as the Tractor Boys claimed promotion to the Premier League.

Last season saw him return to the second tier at Burnley on another loan, which saw him deliver four goals in 37 appearances as the Clarets claimed promotion to the top flight.

Sarmiento could make his debut for Boro at the Riverside Stadium in a Championship clash at home to Norwich on Saturday 31 January at 3pm GMT.
