Coventry suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at Norwich after Romain Esse’s opener was cancelled out by Anis Ben Slimane, before Ali Ahmed sealed the Canaries’ comeback just hours after they signed Paris Maghoma from Brentford.

Middlesbrough consequently cut their deficit to the league leaders down to three points after they thrashed Preston 4-0 at the Riverside Stadium as Tommy Conway struck twice whilst Alan Browne and Morgan Whittaker also found the net.

Ipswich’s promotion hopes suffered a knock after the third-placed Tractor Boys suffered a 3-1 loss at Sheffield United, as Callum O’Hare and Andre Brooks put the Blades ahead before Patrick Bamford sealed victory and was sent off following Jack Clarke’s consolatory effort.

Fourth-placed Hull sat behind Ipswich on goal difference after first-half goals from Oli McBurnie and Regan Slater sealed a 2-1 win over Swansea, despite Liam Cullen’s consolatory finish for the Swans.

Late goals from Caleb Taylor, Luke Cundle and Aidomo Emakhu saw Millwall thrash South-London rivals, Charlton 4-0 at The Den, after Kayne Ramsay’s own-goal had put them into a seventh-minute lead.

Wrexham completed the top six after they snatched a dramatic 3-2 victory at ten-men QPR through injury-time goals from Josh Windass and Ollie Rathbone, after Steve Cook put the Hoops back in front following Callum Doyle’s equaliser to cancel out Harvey Vale’s goal before Amadou Mbengue saw red in the 90th minute.

Down in the relegation zone, rock-bottom Sheffield Wednesday lost 2-0 at Bristol City through second-half goals from Scott Twine and Sam Bell.

Oxford United boosted their survival hopes with a 2-1 victory at Leicester through goals from Sam Long and Mark Harris, before Abdul Fatawu netted the Foxes’ consolatory goal in what proved to be Marti Cifuentes’ last match in charge as he was sacked nearly 24 hours later.

Blackburn remained third-bottom after Lewis Miller’s quick-fire 28th-minute equaliser rescued them a point at home to Watford, just two minutes after Edo Kayembe had put the Hornets in front at Ewood Park.

Elsewhere, Phil Neumann’s own-goal salvaged Stoke a 1-1 draw at Birmingham City after Tomoki Iwata had initially put the Blues ahead at half-time.

Chris Mepham netted a close-range 95th-minute equaliser for West Brom in a 1-1 draw at Derby after Patrick Agyemang’s finish had put the Rams in front at half-time.

Ebou Adams’ header cancelled out Leo Scienza’s strike as Portsmouth fought back for a 1-1 draw against South Coast rivals, Southampton.
