Michael Carrick has been appointed as interim manager at Manchester United until end of 2025-26 season.
Carrick’s interim appointment as manager comes a week after Ruben Amorim was relieved of his duties following a tough first half of the season, and marks the ex Man Utd midfielder’s return to the dugout just six months after he was sacked by Middlesbrough after two-and-a-half years in charge.
Carrick described the interim opportunity as “an honour” for him as he spoke to manutd.com about the role, as he reflected on his title success with the club as a player, which he believes shows that he knows how to get the best out of his new squad until the end of this season.
“I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club, which we know that this group is more than capable of producing.
“I have worked with a number of the players already and have obviously continued to watch the team closely in recent years, I have total belief in their talents, dedication and ability to be successful here.
“There is still a lot to fight for this season, we are ready to pull everyone together and give the fans the performances that their loyal support deserves.”
Utd’s Director of Football, Jason Wilcox added: “Michael is an excellent coach and knows exactly what it takes to win at Manchester United.
“He is ready to lead our talented and determined group of players for the remainder of the season as we continue to build the club towards regular and sustained success.”
The 44-year-old replaces Darren Fletcher who has been in caretaker charge for United’s last two games, in which he oversaw a 2-2 draw at Burnley in the Premier League followed by a 2-1 FA Cup exit at home to Brighton & Hove Albion in the third round.
Carrick previously spent 12 years at Utd as a player in which he scored 14 goals in 464 appearances, during which he helped them claim five Premier League titles alongside;
- 6 x Community Shield
- 3 x EFL Cup
- 1 x FA Cup
- 1 x UEFA Champions League
- 1 x UEFA Europa League
- 1 x Club World Cup
