Foden “so happy” to be Back in England Squad

Forward, Phil Foden is “so happy” to be back within the England squad after he provided an assist in their 2-0 victory against Serbia.

Foden provided the match-clinching assist for Eberechi Eze’s 90th-minute strike on a quick counter-attack after the pair had come on as substitutes, in a game which Bukayo Saka opened the scoring as England ended Serbia’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The 25-year-old missed the last three international windows due to mental health, ankle injury and dip in form but in a post-match interview with ITV, he admitted that he is glad to be back in the squad again.

“It’s amazing to be back. So happy to be back in the squad with these great players – I’m enjoying it.”

Thomas Tuchel deployed Foden as a false nine when he came on as a substitute for Harry Kane, with the Stockport-born player happy with his performance and is hopeful that the position might be the ideal approach to extract peak performance from him for England.

“I thought I did well. I thought I created some chances. Overall, I have to be happy with the impact I did. I was happy to come on as a false nine kind of thing.

“Maybe that will get the best out of me. Only time will tell. As I said, I was happy to come on in that role. We managed to find some space into me. It was a great team performance. The quality players are all over the pitch.”
