Wolves have appointed Rob Edwards as manager on a three-and-a-half year contract until June 2029.
Edwards previously played for Wolves between July 2004 – August 2008 in which he scored one goal in 111 appearances across all competitions, and briefly took interim charge of the team in autumn 2016 for two matches.
He has since gone on to achieve promotion to League One with Forest Green Rovers, before he had a brief spell at Watford which was followed by a move to Luton where he achieved promotion in May 2023 via the play-offs after just six months at the club.
Relegation followed after one season in the Premier League before he left the Hatters in January following their difficulties adjusting to life back in the EFL, and recently was appointed as Middlesbrough manager in June.
Edwards replaces Vitor Pereira after lengthy discussions between Wolves and Boro over permission to speak to him, which were followed by negotiations with himself once the clubs agreed terms and he has now signed a three-and-a-half year contract at Molineux.
Wolves’ Chairman, Jeff Shi welcomed Edwards’ return as he explained that the ex defender brings knowledge to the role from his previous spells with the club on and off the pitch.
“I know Rob very well and I have seen his growth in different jobs. He’s a very good person, he knows the club very well, he knows the city, the fans and he is very talented. When he was a youth coach here, he showed his tactical awareness, but after he took first-team jobs he started to grow his own identity, character and leadership.
“We need to refresh the whole club with a new coach’s philosophy, bringing his own identity and ideas, and we can build on that. We are at a new chapter for the club and Rob will be a key piece of that.”
Middlesbrough released a club statement confirming Edwards’ exit and confirmed that Adi Viveash will take charge on an interim basis, as they search for Edwards’ successor.
“Middlesbrough FC can confirm that Rob Edwards has now officially resigned his post as head coach after agreeing a contract with Wolves.
“Rob had signed a three-year contract with ourselves during the summer, but after he made it clear he was keen to join Wolves, we reluctantly agreed a figure of compensation for both himself and one of his first team coaches, Harry Watling.
“On Saturday the Riverside came together as one, players, staff, and supporters, and you could feel the sense of unity which is at the core of our club. To everyone involved, we would like to say thank you.
“Adi Viveash took charge of team affairs last Saturday and will continue to do so during the interim period.”
Edwards takes over a Wolves side sat bottom of the Premier League with just two points and an eight-point gap to safety, whilst Middlesbrough currently sit second in the Championship after a 2-1 home win against Birmingham City.
