Anthony Gordon credited England’s “togetherness” behind their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualification with a 5-0 victory away to Latvia.
Gordon opened the scoring before Harry Kane’s brace, an own-goal from Maksims Tonisevs and Eberechi Eze’s finish sealed qualification in Riga, albeit with two games to spare and no goals conceded in their qualifying campaign.
“It was top from start to finish,” explained Gordon who praised manager – Thomas Tuchel for the improved performances and closer togetherness, even without like Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Jack Grealish and Cole Palmer missing out due to a mixture of form and injuries.
“The manager said in the changing room that we haven’t conceded a goal. Every performance, the commitment and the vibes and the attitude, everyone’s giving everything and you can see that on the pitch.
“It’s that togetherness. You see on the pitch we’re fighting and giving absolutely everything for each other which can be difficult in an international environment, because lads are coming from everywhere and we don’t see each other often.
“The manager and the staff have really honed in on creating that and it’s paid off.
“It feels good because it gives the lads some chemistry and familiarity with each other. We know what each other’s going to do when we get the ball and that always helps, especially attacking-wise.”
Gordon’s goal was only his second goal in an England senior shirt 11 months on from his first goal which coincidentally came in another 5-0 win, albeit against Republic of Ireland in November 2024 in the UEFA Nations League.
I should’ve scored the other day at Wembley,” reflected Gordon on his performance in England’s 3-0 friendly win over Wales last week, but he was glad to pull off his goal after hard work in training with support from goalkeeper, Dean Henderson.
“I’ve been practising that exact finish in training, and I want to thank Dean Henderson for taking the time to be in goal for me. Practice makes perfect.”
