Newcastle United have signed forward, Yoane Wissa from Brentford for £55m.
Wissa’s move came after he and Brentford found themselves in a stand-off this summer akin to Newcastle’s situation with Alexander Isak which concluded in his £125m transfer to Liverpool on deadline day.
Isak’s departure consequently paved the way for Newcastle to end tension between Wissa and Brentford with a £55m bid which the Bees accepted, as the deal consisted of a £50m fixed fee plus £5m in add-ons which marked a considerable improvement on previous offers this summer.
Wissa will wear the number nine shirt and has signed a five-year contract until June 2030 and is pleased to complete his move to St James’ Park.
“I’m really happy to be here and to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.
“I’m very, very excited to put on the black and white shirt. I’ve got dreams, I’ve got faith and now I will do my best to make it all happen. I can’t wait to get started.”
Newcastle’s Head Coach, Eddie Howe added that he is “delighted” to sign a proven forward in Wissa who will excite supporters in the wake of Isak’s exit.
“He brings proven Premier League quality, demonstrated not only by his goalscoring output but also the crucial work he does for the team.
“Yoane’s style of play will excite our supporters and complement our style of play – he has pace, power and an excellent work rate. He immediately makes us stronger.”
Wissa began his career in France with two spells at Epinay-sous-Senart either side of a stint at Linas-Montihery, before he moved to Chateauroux where he broke into the senior squad with seven goals in 24 appearances.
A spell at Angers followed in which he managed just two senior appearances before he was loaned to Laval then Ajaccio IN 2017, before he enjoyed four seasons at Lorient in which he netted 37 goals in 128 appearances and helped them achieve promotion to Ligue 1 in 2020.
August 2021 saw Wissa make the move to Brentford where he played a key role in the Bees’ successful consolidation of their Premier League status over the last four seasons, during which he scored 20 goals and contributed five assists in all competitions last season.
