Newcastle United have signed midfielder, Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa in a £43m transfer.
Villa’s need to meet Profit and Sustainability Rules left them with little alternative other than to accept a £43m bid from Newcastle – consisting of £39m fixed fee and £4m in add-ons – for Ramsey, who replaces Sean Longstaff following the latter’s move to Leeds United in July.
Ramsey has signed a five-year contract until June 2030 and has been confirmed to wear the number 41 shirt this season, as he spoke of feeling “delighted” to make the move.
“This is a big move for me, but as soon as I knew the gaffer was interested and really liked me, it didn’t take much time to decide. His track record of developing players, especially those who have gone on to become internationals here, speaks for itself.
“It was always a tough game playing for Villa against Newcastle – the team is full of energy, so athletic and the fans are so passionate. I feel my game will suit that and I’m excited to be on the other end of it now.”
Howe added: “Jacob is another fantastic addition to our squad. His qualities will bring us something different on the pitch and he fits the profile of being young and hungry to develop, but also with a wealth of Premier League football under his belt.
“Jacob offers versatility and his directness in attack and has proven to be a real threat at this level in recent seasons. He performed very well in the Champions League last season too and we believe he’ll be a major asset for us.”
Ramsey began his career at Villa in their youth setup and broke through into the first team as an unused substitute in a 1-0 loss at Brentford in the Championship, before he made his senior debut in a 2-0 home loss to West Bromwich Albion just days later.
January 2020 saw Ramsey join Doncaster on loan which saw him net three goals in seven appearances before he returned to Villa where he became a first-team regular amidst various hamstring injuries, whilst he also struggled with muscle, foot and toe injuries in recent seasons.
Ramsey’s first goal for Villa came in October 2021 as he netted a consolatory effort in a 3-1 loss at Arsenal in North London, and he has since gone on to score 17 goals in 167 total appearances for the Villains.
