Bayern Sign Diaz from Liverpool in £65.5m transfer

Bayern Munich has signed Colombian winger, Luis Diaz from Liverpool in a £65.5 million transfer. 

Diaz’s move comes after three-and-a-half years at Anfield where he scored 41 goals and contributed 16 assists in 148 appearances, during which he helped the Reds to two EFL Cup titles plus one Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield title apiece.

The 28-year-old however had decided to move on for a fresh challenge at Bayern who initially saw multiple bids rejected before Liverpool accepted a £65.5 million offer, with Diaz having signed a four-year contract at the Bundesliga club until June 2029 with option for a further year.

Speaking upon confirmation of his move, Diaz spoke of his pride at sealing the transfer.

“It means a lot to me to be part of FC Bayern – it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world. I want to help my new team with my style of playing football and my personality.”

Liverpool thanked Diaz in a short statement for his contributions to their success during his time on Merseyside.

“Everybody at Liverpool FC thanks Luis for all of his contributions during his time at the club and wishes him the best for the future.”

Diaz began his career at Barranquilla where he managed three goals in 42 appearances between 2016-17 before he joined their parent club, Atletico Junior which saw him produce 20 goals in 106 appearances as they won 2018 & 19 Categoria Primera A titles.

He also was part of their 2017 Copa Colombia and 2019 Superliga Colombiana title-winning squads, before he moved to Porto in July 2019, where he won two Primeira Liga titles plus one Taca de Portugal and Supertaca Candido de Oliveira title  apiece in two-and-a-half seasons.

During his time at Porto, Diaz delivered 41 goals and 12 assists in 125 appearances prior to his move to Liverpool in January 2022.

Diaz has represented Colombia at international level since his senior debut in September 2018 and has contributed 19 goals in 64 appearances.
