King Charles III and Queen Camilla praised England for proving that “there are no setbacks so tough” following their successful title defence at UEFA Women’s Euro 2025.
Alessia Russo’s headed equaliser cancelled out Mariona Caldentey’s opening header as the Lionesses held Spain to a 1-1 draw after extra-time, before Chloe Kelly dispatched the winning penalty as England defended their title with a 3-1 penalty shootout win.
The victory also meant that the Lionesses became the first England team to win a major title on foreign soil, as well as the first team in UEFA Women’s Euro history to lift the title at a single tournament after losing their opening match.
Their achievements naturally won many applauds led by King Charles III and Queen Camilla who sent a congratulatory message expressing “great pride” at the title defence as he reflected on the nation’s footballing anthem ‘ Football’s Coming Home’ which has haunted many past generations.
“This brings you, your manager and all your support team my most heartfelt congratulations on winning the EUROS 2025.
“For more years than I care to remember, England fans have sung that famous chant ‘football’s coming home’.
“As you return home with the trophy you won at Wembley three years ago, it is a source of great pride that, through sporting skill and awesome teamwork, the Lionesses have made those words ring true.
“For this, you have my whole family’s warmest appreciation and admiration.”
The Monarch proceeded to reflect on the lessons learned from the tournament which saw Michelle Agyemang burst onto the international stage as a super substitute, amidst survival of extra time and two penalty shootouts throughout the knockout stages.
“More than that, though, you have shown through your example over past weeks that there are no setbacks so tough that defeat cannot be transformed into victory, even as the final whistle looms. Well done, Lionesses.
“The next task is to bring home the World Cup in 2027 if you possibly can! Charles R”
UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer echoed the King’s sentiments as he praised the Lionesses for how they “dug deep” throughout the knockout stages to do England proud.
